How a DUI can affect your driver's license

It happens. As a college student, many of your peers drink. You wanted to hang out with your friends, but you did not know your limit. There was no designated driver. You decided to get behind the wheel. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but you will have to deal with the consequences.

There will be ramifications when you get a DUI. The biggest one you are probably worried about is when you will be able to drive again. For those in your situation, driving is a privilege you may lose when you are charged with a DUI in Reno.

Penalties of a DUI charge

If you are charged with a DUI, you may have your license revoked for a period of 90 days. During that time, should you choose to drive, you may face a longer period of license revocation and other penalties, including fines or jail time. A person's first DUI comes with the lightest penalties. Each subsequent offense comes with harsher punishments; a third DUI is a felony with a prison sentence of up to six years.

Getting your license back

If you have lose your license, it is possible to earn it back at the DMV. There are multiple steps in this process, and each situation is different. In general, however, you will need to:

  • Fully pay all fines and fees you have incurred
  • Retake and pass the driver's license written and vision tests

Depending on the severity of your charge and history, you may also have to have an Ignition Interlock Device installed into your vehicle.

Protect your rights

A DUI charge is nothing to be taken lightly. If you are facing charges, possibly the most important thing you can do is contact a skilled criminal defense attorney. They will know how to defend your rights, fight to allow you to retain your license and keep your reputation protected.
