Personal injury and death from pedestrian accidents increasing

In Reno and across Nevada, many people decide to avoid using their motor vehicles and walk to their destination. This is a good way to save money, help the environment and get exercise. However, being a pedestrian has its share of inherent risks when sharing the road with motor vehicles. Although the danger is known, statistics and research indicate that people are at higher risk now more than ever. Those who have suffered personal injury or lost a loved one in a pedestrian accident must be cognizant of all the problems they will face in the aftermath and consider a lawsuit to be compensated.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says that pedestrian fatalities has reached its highest level since 1990. GHSA analyzed the numbers for 2018 and says that approximately 6,227 pedestrians died in auto accidents. That is a rise of 4 percent compared to 2017. Although there has been improvement in just about every other area of safety on the road in the last 10 years, pedestrian fatalities have increased by 35 percent in that timespan.

There are many reasons that are believed to have sparked the increase in pedestrian fatalities with distracted driving, speeding and drowsiness problematic, but a major concern is the rising prominence of SUVs. Because these vehicles are larger, heavier and make it harder to see pedestrians on the road, crashes are common and fatal injuries result on a troublesome basis. Since 2013, the number of pedestrians who were killed in a crash with an SUV has increased by around 50 percent. Other vehicles saw an increase as well, but it was lower - around 30 percent.

Nevada is noted as a state where there has been population growth and this too is considered a factor as the more people who are on the road, the greater chance there is of being a fatal accident. With more people walking, this is a trend that must be addressed. Since pedestrian accidents can do such damage with severe injuries and death, those who were hurt or lost a loved one in these crashes must think about how to pay for medical costs, lost wages, funeral expenses and more. A law firm that is experienced in investigating pedestrian crashes can assist with taking the necessary steps to file a personal injury lawsuit to receive compensation for all that was lost.
